Imagine being four years old again. You have no responsibilities except to play. You therefore go to the dramatic play area and explore your surroundings. You decide that today you are going to be a cook. You then proceed to take out the food, the dishes, the pots and pans and you set off for your adventure. As a four year old, this is your job – to play, to imagine and to play. Play is how a child learns. For healthy growth and development, children need to play. When a child plays they have the ability to use all of their senses. Through play a child can learn about themselves, their environment and the people around them. Children learn through their experiences!
Our center's curriculum is an active learning envirnoment. The children learn through play. They are able to play and learn through the centers in their individual rooms. The children have opportunities to play outside both morning and afternoon, to build towers or ships in the block area, to boost their language in the reading or computer centers and to become someone else in the dramatic play centers. BCDC encourages the children to let the caregivers know what their interests are so it can be incorporated it into the daily activities. BCDC feels that a child learns more when the curriculum is child-initiated, teacher supported play. In order for a child to learn through play, children need to be in a relaxed environment. Play needs to be voluntary and spontaneous. It must also be fun and enjoyable for the children. If teachers of young children tell a child what they can or cannot play with a child is never going to venture out on his/her own. As teachers, we need to make sure there are no hidden agendas to free play. We need to provide guidance if children need help and ask questions to spark a child’s thinking and imagination. We need to always make sure that during play we are encouraging the children in our care. When children are able to follow their interests in a child-initiated play environment, with caregivers that support the children’s wants – learning takes place.
